The Kansas School School District announced today it has delayed a meeting where School Board members were expected to elect a new board president and other officers.
Sources with district say that meeting, which was scheduled for tonight, was delayed due in part to an ongoing investigation into Northeast Board member Duane Kelly. Officials are looking into whether Kelly actually lives in the district that he was elected to represent.
In a press release sent this afternoon, district officials said the meeting was being delayed until next week because of the "unavailability of two newly elected board members illness and/or for reasons beyond their control."
Kelly, after a major school district shift last fall, technically lived in the Independence School District and had not relocated to a new home in his new, smaller district.
Kelly said he had rented an apartment in the 200-block of North Indiana in the Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood, but neighbors said they never see him there. one resident even contacted the district's attorney to file a complaint.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 23 in the Auditorium at the Board of Education Building, 12ll McGee St.

Eleventh Ward Committee race heats up at city park and recreation board meeting - really?
It was a celebration that brought together two political adversaries for a brisk handshake and a chuckle-chocked conversation.11th Ward Democratic Committee candidates Will Royster and John "JJ" Rizzo shared a brief moment in the lobby of the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department.
What could bring the offspring of two political dynasties together? Well, it was definitley not their shared vision for who should fill the Northeast's house seat. No, Rizzo was there to show his support for Royster's plan to make Cliff Drive car free on the weekends this summer.
The Parks board on Tuesday approved the plan, which Royster has been working on with parks staff since the fall.
Rizzo is currently running against incumbent John Burnett for a third time for Northeast's house seat. Royster dropped out of that race last month to focus on the committee race where he will also face Rizzo.
Before the meeting started Rizzo dropped in and sat near the back while Royster presented his plan. Afterward Rizzo sought out Royster and congratulated him and said that even he, an avid cyclist, looked forward to using Cliff Drive on the weekends.
The parks board unanimously approved the Cliff Drive plan. The Scenic byway is expected to be closed to vehicle traffic starting May 16.

Buzz for Wednesday, March 26
Aaaaaand they’re off!!
We here at The News must have missed the starting gun and the track announcer introducing the candidates but we sure didn’t miss the cheers and jeers as the candidates rounded turn number one in what promises to be one of the hottest tickets in local politics this season.
We are definitely off to the races.
The verdict? It’s going to be Politics as usual, Northeast style this summer.
Based on the mud that’s been thrown up thus far — we don’t think anyone will be immune as both the weather and the political scene heats up this summer.
When I got this gig about ten years back, former publisher Brock advised me: “Don’t do endorsements, you’ll make nobody happy and everybody angry.”
Well this little dog is livin’ by those sage words of advice and currently has no intention of throwing support behind someone or even taking a stand on who to vote for in this one — unless someone runs for dogcatcher, then we might howl a bit.
Kibble is a fine treat, but this dog lives off the truth.
We are not here to make friends and be popular. We are here to be a voice for Historic Northeast neighborhoods and be the voice of truth standing tall amid the din of political rhetoric.
We hear that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. Well, this old pooch still has some young blood in her and she not going to “sit” or “ stay” during this primary election.
Bette Davis said it best: “fasten your seat belts fellas, its going to be a bumpy ride.”

We would like to offer a personal wag of the tail to the find folks at the Kansas City Police Department for their crime lab and smart police work.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms recognized the Kansas City Regional Crime Lab for their use of technology when matching weapons used by criminals in certain cases.
Since 2002, the lab had successfully made 100 matches of bullets recovered at crime scene with the weapon that was used. And, to add to the kudos, the labs in just the past two months has already made another 20 matches using the ATF database.
In one case police were left with no clues other than the spent shell casings from the crime scene. LAter that year a police officer was assaulted, the suspect was arrested and his weapon seized.
Police using the weapon and lab technology were able to match the weapon and the shells and made a case against the man.
Congrats and keep up the good work.

BREAKING NEWS: Royster out of State House race
It seems Will Royster's foray into politics was more of a day trip than a serious campaign.According to the Missouri Secretary of State, Royster has pulled his name from the running in his bid for the District 40 Missouri Legislature seat.
Royster had thrown his hat into the ring two weeks ago challenging two Northeast power families: State Rep. John Burnett and John "JJ" Rizzo.
Royster threatened to upset the two seasoned politicians who have gone at each other's throats in past elections.
But Royster, who has a large groundswell of grass roots support though the neighborhoods, is not out of politics all together. Expect more to come from this neighborhood activist in the coming week.

Burnett, Rizzo and Royster make three
Mike Ekey/The Northeast NewsCommunity activist Will Royster has firmly planted his foot into the seat of the political status quo in Northeast.
Less than a week after announcing he wanted to challenge State Rep John Burnett to his own seat, Royster then opened his house to Democratic big-wig Jay Nixon, who is making his own run for Missouri Governor.
But what caught this knee-high Newshoud's eye was when Burnett and Royster — supposedly political rivals — standing on the stairs together and introducing Nixon at a Northeast fundraiser.
The only thing missing from this Gubernatorial Group Hug for Democrats was John "JJ" Rizzo, who is also challenging Burnett for his Missouri House seat — again.
But things are bound to change in these politically savvy neighborhoods.
Muzzle me? I think not.

Dogs don’t like being muzzled; especially this little Newshound when covering, witnessing or simply doing anything in Northeast.
We know it is a big dog-eared deal when a gubernatorial candidate and sitting governor visit Historic Northeast in the same day. Politics aside, you cannot ignore the importance of two major players in the state’s government paying special attention to our neighborhoods and offering their time to us.
That is, until they decide they would prefer their visits to be completely unknown.
Republican Governor Matt Blunt, who seems to have a little extra time on his hands now that he has jumped from the governor’s race, stopped at one Historic Northeast school to read to children and even hold his own question and answer period with the kids.
But when it came to talking with those same Northeast school folks or even sticking around for a question or two from the two reporters who happened to hear about the low-key event, he headed directly for the door and into his assigned Highway Patrol cruiser.
Spokesmen for Blunt said he had nothing else scheduled and was there to promote literacy. But shortly after the school visit, Blunt was spotted not too far away raising money for Republicans at the Lincoln Day’s Festival in Kearney, Mo.
No need for the Gov to be late to his next fundraiser, I suppose.
The biggest state snub, though, hit us right between the eyes when Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Nixon came to Northeast to attend a fundraiser held in his honor.
The Northeast News was invited as a guest to cover the event, but Nixon’s handlers decided to ax that plan and stopped both of our reporter at the door for a formal “briefing.”
No questions. No quotes. No pictures of donors. Do not follow the candidate. We couldn’t even quote the generic church-tent-revival-style stump speech Nixon gave.
At one point, when we were taking photos of the party’s host Will Royster and State Rep. John Burnett, Nixon’s people tapped us on the shoulder and told us to stop or we would be removed from his shindig.
It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to.
It is unfortunate and even insulting that after so many people came together in Northeast to promote the issues and problems that are near and dear to us that the state candidate would then want to make sure that as few people as possible knew he was there.
But if you were not there then you will never know.
Kudos to Royster who opened his home to promote and involve Northeast in having Nixon in because he wanted the spotlight shone on an area that gets ignored regularly by local, county and state officials.
But as much as Royster wanted to show that Northeast was not getting snubbed, Nixon’s people decided to take it upon themselves to do just that and snubbed the local community newspaper.
We plan on inviting candidates in this upcoming election to sit down with us at The Northeast News to talk about their plans. When we do, maybe Nixon can explain what happened last week.
That is so long as he leaves the muzzle in Jefferson City.
